    Academic Background

    Dr Wheeler (MA BM BCh DM PhD MRCP FRCA FFPMRCA) is a Consultant Anaesthetist at the Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital, Norwich, UK. His early postgraduate training encompassed diabetes and endocrinology, care of the elderly, and emergency medicine. He became a member of the Royal College of Physicians in 1997, and then trained in anesthesia, intensive care medicine, and pain medicine in London, then Cambridge. He became a fellow of the Royal College of Anaesthetists in 2000, and of the Faculty of Pain Medicine in 2009. Dr Wheeler was Lecturer in Anaesthesia at the University of Cambridge from 1999 to 2013, conducting research into neurobiology and patient safety. Since 2013, he has been a Consultant at the Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital, where he conducts his NHS clinical practice. His main clinical interest is pain medicine, specifically genetic influences on pain sensation, sciatica, back and neck pain, complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), and cancer pain. He also works as an anesthesiologist, focusing mainly on neuroanesthesia and anesthesia for emergency surgery.

    Publishing History

    Dr Wheeler has published more than 40 scientific papers, has edited a textbook, and authored chapters in textbooks. His research has led to the award of a PhD from the University of Cambridge in 2006, and a higher Doctorate in Medicine from the University of Oxford in 2009.

    Editing and Reviewing Experience

    Dr Wheeler regularly reviews manuscripts for academic journals, and grant applications from national and international funding bodies. He is on the research committee of the Australasian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists, and the scientific advisory panel of a global pharmaceutical company. He was Peri-operative Medicine and Basic Science subspecialty editor of Surgery, a journal published by the Medicine Publishing Company, Abingdon, UK (now part of Elsevier Health Sciences). He joined Edanz Group as an editor and research consultant in 2012.
