Dr Mittwede is an orthopedic surgery resident in the clinician-scientist track program at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC). He received an MD from the University of Mississippi Medical Center. At the same institution, he also completed a PhD in the Department of Physiology and Biophysics in the laboratory of Dr Robert Hester, where he studied the effects of orthopedic trauma on the lungs and kidneys. During his training, Dr Mittwede received funding for his research from the American Heart Association and the Orthopaedic Trauma Association, and published his research in peer-reviewed journals. He has presented his work and has been a featured pre-doctoral speaker at multiple conferences across the United States.
Dr Mittwede has published 17 peer-reviewed articles and editorials in journals including the American Journal of Physiology, Diabetes, and Microcirculation.
During his PhD studies, Dr Mittwede gained experience editing and was also actively involved with mentoring and tutoring undergraduate, medical, and graduate students. He joined Edanz Group as an editor in 2016.
